Crossword Mysteries: Abracadaver

Starring: Lacey Chabert, Brennan Elliott

Premieres: Sunday, January 5, 2020

*See more details & images for this movie - HERE!

Storyline via Hallmark: When a magician drops dead in the middle of a performance, New York Sentinel Crosswords editor (and part-time sleuth) Tess Harper and NYPD’s detective Logan O’Connor team up to discover exactly whose sleight of hand is behind what turns out to be a premeditated murder. Together, they must uncover the not-so-obvious clues and work their investigative magic to bring a killer to justice.

Movie Review: This magic themed mystery movie was originally supposed to premiere in the fall of 2019, but it disappeared from the schedule. Thankfully, Hallmark reappeared it to launch their mystery movie franchises in January, 2020!

In this all new "Crossword Mysteries" film, Detective Logan O’Connor (portrayed by Brennan Elliott) is back on the case when a magician ends up murdered on stage during a magic act in the middle of Tess' birthday celebration. Of course, Tess (portrayed by Lacey Chabert) is determined to help solve this case, even though Logan and her Aunt Candace (portrayed by Barbara Niven) ask her repeatedly not to get involved.

Notes of Caution: I would caution this movie for really young viewers, simply because it is a murder mystery and relating to the case... there is a brief discussion of the possible involvement of a married woman with another man. There may also be some casual drinking at a party. And some children may be fearful of some of the magic tricks.

Illusions seem to be everywhere when it comes to magic, and you never know what to expect next. With smoke and mirrors, a missing trunk and a stage trap door... there's a mystery around every corner!

I must say, it's always a delight to see Lacey Chabert and Brennan Elliott on screen together - they have such an in sync chemistry, that certain undeniable spark! My absolute favorite moment in this film was when they crashed a dance class and proceeded to take pretend lessons. Those two really know how to move across the dance floor and in to our hearts!

Whether they are being silly or serious, Lacey are Brennan are always a joy to watch in all of their movies together, and I'm certainly looking forward to even more "Crossword Mysteries!"

Should YOU see it?

Now you see it, now you don't! If you enjoy a good mystery, then you'll definitely want to see this magical one!

A Beautiful Place to Die: A Martha's Vineyard Mystery

Starring: Jesse Metcalfe, Sarah Lind

Premieres: Sunday, January 12, 2020

*Special simulcast airing for this premiere on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, the Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Drama!

Storyline via Hallmark: After being injured and facing loss in the line of duty, retired Boston Police Detective Jeff Jackson (Metcalfe) returns to a quiet life of fishing, living in his late father’s home on Martha’s Vineyard. When a mysterious visitor to the island turns up dead, Jeff is reluctantly recruited to help in the investigation by the local police chief, a family friend. Adding a layer of complication, Zee Madieras – the chief’s daughter and Jeff’s former flame – is the medical examiner on the case. As the murder investigation casts suspicion on some of the town’s most powerful and wealthy citizens and brings Jeff and Zee’s lives in peril, they race to solve the case before another murder strikes the peaceful vacation town.

Movie Review: This movie is rated TV-PG, which I thought was suitable being a murder mystery. This is a film that may require parental guidance. Based on the subject matter, I feel this movie may be more suitable for those aged 13+.

Notes of Caution: There is dialogue about two adults (relating to the case) who may have had an affair in the past. Also, there is some casual drinking. After the murdered victim is discovered, the doctor is shown various times looking over the corpse. (I may have looked away here... just a minute... however, it was not shown in great detail.)

I thought Jesse Metcalfe was outstanding in his role, as retired Boston Police Detective Jeff Jackson. Being an expert in homicide investigations, there was a wonderful balance in his assisting the police and taking a step back. Although, circumstances in the case continuously draw him back in to working alongside the police chief and local doctor/old girlfriend, Zee... until they eventually discover who-dun-it.

Overall, this is a thrilling, action packed mystery, which is sure to appeal to those who like suspense and intrigue.
