Drawn to the Game: Classic Disney Short Subjects that Celebrate Football

By Michael Lyons

Whether you’re a fan of the game, the half time show or the commercials, there’s no denying that Super Bowl Sunday is, well, Super.

There are plenty of ways to prep for the big game: some may toss a football around the backyard, while others might consume enough Buffalo Wings to fill the city of Buffalo.

A less strenuous and low calorie way to get ready for the Super Bowl is to watch football themed movies.  And, a most unexpected genre features some fun football centered entertainment.

Several classic short subjects from the Walt Disney Studio featuring some of their most iconic characters take to the grid iron and all of them make for winning Super Bowl Sunday viewing.

“Touchdown Mickey” (1932)

In glorious black and white, Mickey Mouse, oh so young with his vintage look and button eyes, must lead his football team  (Mickey’s Manglers) and square off against the rough and tumble Alley Cats.

Made only four years after the introduction of Mickey Mouse, this short features animation that can best be described as quaint and comfortable.

Sight gags are predictable and repetitious (a player rolls down the field, flattening other players like pancakes), but there is such earnest innocence to “Touchdown Mickey,” especially when realizing how far animation has come since this short was originally made.

Minnie and Pluto are also featured, as is an early version of Goofy, as the game’s announcer, in this entertaining trip back to the early days of the Mouse that Walt built!

“How to Play Football” (1944)

Of all of the “Goofy How To” short subjects during this time period, this is one of the best, filled with not only great animation, but also a great, satiric look at the game.

In it, “Anthropology A&M” goes head-to-head with “Taxidermy Tech,” and all of the players seem to look exactly like Goofy, as everyone from the spoiled star player to the rabid coach find themselves lampooned.

Helmed by veteran Disney shorts director Jack Kinney, “How to Play Football” is a seven minute blur of creatively paced cartoon violence that craftily comments on the real life violence of the game itself, while somehow never letting you forget you’re watching a Disney cartoon.

“Football Now and Then” (1953)

Also directed by Kinney, this is a seldom seen entry in the Disney cartoon shorts canon.  In it, a grandfather and his grandson watch a football game between players from “yesteryear” (called “Bygone U.”) and today (“Present State”).

Like “How to Play Football,” this short also serves as a satirical commentary on the game, this time during the age of television, as the camera literally swoops in for the huddle and a strange commercial for dishwashers continually interrupts the game.

The short also comments on how the game has changed through the years and without Mickey, Goofy, or any of the standard Disney players in it, “Football Now and Then” is that rare, stand alone Disney short and one with a very off-kilter perspective.

So, as the Super Bowl drifts into it’s seventh hour on Sunday, consider any of these shorts to break up the night and bring a little, well, character to the game.

🎄 Three *Purr*fect CHRISTMAS MOVIE TREATS from Hallmark this Week... the Cat's Out of the Bag! 🐾 🐾 DE*TAILS* HERE:

You'll definitely want to *paws* (pause) this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night for Christmas on Hallmark!

Here are the CHRISTMAS MOVIES you can look forward to seeing this week on ALL THREE HALLMARK NETWORKS...

🌟🌟🌟

Hallmark Drama's
"Home for the Holidays"
classic Christmas movie presentation is...
"Angel of Christmas"
on Wednesday, January 29th at 9pm/8c..

image: Hallmark Crown Media

Storyline via Hallmark: Susan is a newspaper staffer who decides to generate some Christmas spirit by writing an article about her family’s storied 100-year-old, hand-carved, heirloom Christmas angel. This leads her to accidentally meet Brady, a cute, upbeat artist who insists that he and Susan become fast friends (at least). It turns out that this angel also has the spiritual power to bring people together – as it seems to be doing with Susan and Brady. What’s behind this enchanted ornament? As time moves on, more about this captivating artifact is revealed.

🌟🌟🌟

Hallmark Movies & Mysteries
"Miracles of Christmas"
classic Christmas movie presentation is
"Holiday Hearts"
on Thursday, January 30th at 9pm/8c.

image: Hallmark Crown Media

Storyline via Hallmark: While planning an annual Christmas party, Peyton is forced together with Ben to care for a friend's daughter. While finding their Christmas spirit, will there be some romance along the way?

🌟🌟🌟

Hallmark Channel's
"Countdown to Christmas"
classic Christmas movie presentation is
"The Nine Lives of Christmas"
on Friday, January 31st at 10pm/9c.

image: Hallmark Crown Media

Storyline via Hallmark: Fireman Zachary Stone (Routh) is a confirmed bachelor who doesn’t believe in love or commitment. When a stray, tabby cat named Ambrose shows up at his door, Zachary takes him in and slowly starts to see that a little companionship might not be so bad after all. Zachary’s commitment to solitude is further challenged when he meets Marilee (Sustad), an animal lover and veterinary student who teaches Zachary how to care for his new feline roommate. Chemistry immediately develops between the two, but Marilee has vowed not to date until she graduates and Zachary is not ready to jeopardize his independence, though he senses Marilee is special.

With Christmas rapidly approaching, Marilee’s sister Jaclyn (Bennett) convinces her to add romance to her nose-to-the-grindstone life of work and school, while fire chief Sam (Harrison) encourages Zachary to understand the importance of love, marriage and having someone special with whom to share the holidays. When Zachary’s model girlfriend Blair (Hobbs) pressures him to get rid of Ambrose and has Marilee fired from her job at a pet supply store that her father owns, Zachary sees the light, realizing he is in love with Marilee and that life is better if shared with someone special.

🌟🌟🌟

Once again, I hope you all enjoy watching Christmas this week!

"The Nine Lives of Christmas" is *ONE* of my absolute favorites! Is it *ONE* of your favorites, too? As Zachary asks Marilee, how do you know it's THE ONE? Well, you just know... right? I've loved this movie, like many of you, since the very first time I ever watched it, and yet each time it replays, I get caught up in watching it again, as if I've never seen it. And... I know it was one of those movies that my sweet Aunt, who just passed away last week and went to be with Jesus, loved too! So... I may watch this Christmas movie this week with a smile and a tear or two.

I often say, that is the most beautiful thing about Hallmark movies... not only are the films meaningful and a joy to watch, but they often hold warm, wonderful memories of our lives. I hope you'll enjoy watching, too, and make some special new memories!

What is your Christmas movie pick of the week?

Plus, see the Christmas TV Schedule for more Christmas movies airing in February.

ICYMI: CHRISTMAS MOVIE NEWS on "Angel Falls" Sequel and a Jane Austen themed Movie!

image: Hallmark Crown Media

Last week news was released on two upcoming Christmas movies at Deadline.com - by New York Times bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz.

The first Christmas movie announced was: "Christmas in Angel Falls 3," starring Rachel Boston and Paul Greene, who will be reprising their same roles from the first "Christmas in Angel Falls" film, which premiered on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries in 2017. According to the article, this sequel "will continue the story of an angel who falls in love with a mortal and gives up her wings."

The second Christmas movie mentioned was: "Christmas at Mansfield Park." No news, yet, on who will star, however we do know this movie will be an adaptation from Jane Austen's novel, "Mansfield Park." I simply adore Jane Austen's books and authentic movie portrayals, and I have high hopes for this one, as well. Austen's "Mansfield Park" has a bit of intrigue and mystery to it; I certainly hope this Christmas movie will too!

Update on my Precious Aunt and a Thoughtful Message from Hallmark Actor, Paul Greene...

Thank you all for your continued prayers for my precious Aunt. I feel the love and support of this dear "It's a Wonderful Movie" family, which means the world to me.

Each day she is a miracle, defying the odds the doctors have set before us. She fell on Friday and hit her head causing a brain bleed.

My aunt lives alone, but she has children, grandchildren, and siblings who check in on her, from time to time. However, since this occurred early in the day and many of them were at work, it could have been many, many hours before she was discovered. But the Good Lord had another plan. On Fridays, my aunt drives a neighbor/church friend to get her hair done, go shopping, out to eat, and pick up groceries, etc. Well, when my aunt didn't show up at their scheduled time, her friend became worried. She thankfully called their pastor and they went to check.

From there, my aunt was taken to the hospital, where we learned there was bleeding in her brain. She had stopped breathing in the ambulance and was put on a ventilator. The doctors said the bleeding was in the middle of the brain and there was nothing they could do surgically. They didn't give us much hope, at that point, but we didn't give up, we were all still interceding for her healing. I'm so grateful for each and everyone who said a prayer, too.

On Saturday, the doctors advised my cousins to remove their Mother from the ventilator, informing them she would most likely only live 10 minutes after doing so. The family all gathered around her singing praise songs and hymns. 10 minutes passed... 20... 30... and so on... and now nearly 48 hours have passed, and she is still breathing on her own- Praise God!!!

She looks comfortable as she is resting and I know this time is healing. Each step, each day has been a miracle, thus far, and I know there are many steps to go...

My family and I keep repeating the same scripture- that has given us great peace throughout this difficult time... "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." ~Matthew 19:26 (NKJV)

When all of this first happened, I recalled right away that this similar event happened to Paul Greene's mother. (Paul Greene of "When Calls the Heart") I remembered praying for her and Paul when it occurred, and being so happy, rejoicing with their family when she recovered. Knowing Paul's mother was able to overcome this, gave me and my family such great hope. My Momma suggested reaching out to him and his Mother for prayer, so I sent a prayer request through my friend Ruth Hill, who I knew could get the message to Paul. Ruth responded right away and let me know she would be praying, along with Paul and his mother (a prayer warrior, as Ruth called her), with all of us. And Paul, so graciously and giving, sent the most beautiful, encouraging voice message to my Sister through Instagram, to play for my Aunt. Paul's reassuring, calming voice was telling my Aunt she could get through this, many people are praying for her; it is possible. It was such a precious moment when we played that message for her in the hospital; everyone became silent all at once and gathered around to listen. I just know if my Aunt could've responded at that moment, she would've been overwhelmed and elated by Paul's sweet message. She just loves "When Calls the Heart" and all the Hallmark movies. From now on, Paul will always have a special place in my families' heart. And as we all listened intently to Paul's message, who plays a physician on "When Calls the Heart," it was a comfort knowing our hope is in The Great Physician.

My aunt's condition is the same today, but we are beyond grateful she continues to breath on her own. Family stays by her side 24/7, and she is never alone. And we know The Lord has been by her side every moment along the way.

Thank you all for your continued prayers. If you would like to add her name to your prayer list, her first name is Margaret.

God Bless You All, Net
